California Firm Recalls Dumplings With Meat That May Contain Glass

WASHINGTON, Dec. 12, 2003 – Golden Crown Foods Inc., a City of Industry, Calif., firm is voluntarily recalling an additional 75,711 pounds of frozen meat dumplings that may contain pieces of glass, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The expanded recall includes 26,111 pounds of products produced between October 7 and December 8 that were distributed to grocery stores in California and were not part of the original recall.

The additional dumpling products subject to recall are approximately 21 oz. bags of:

  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, DUMPLINGS, CABBAGE, CATFISH & PORK, APPROX. 33 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, DUMPLINGS, CABBAGE, SEA CUCUMBER & PORK, APPROX. 33 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, CORN & CHICKEN DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, CORN & PORK DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, PORK & LEEK DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”

On Dec. 8, Golden Crown Foods initially recalled approximately 14,400 pounds of dumplings with meat that may contain pieces of glass. An error in total poundage reported by the company has been subsequently corrected. As a result, the total number of pounds of the initial recall increases to approximately 64,000 pounds.

The dumplings subject to the expanded original recall are approximately 21 oz. bags of:

  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, CHICKEN & LEEK DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, CABBAGE & PORK DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, CABBAGE & CHICKEN DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”
  • “FORTUNE AVENUE, PORK, VEGETABLE & BLACK MUSHROOM DUMPLINGS, APPROX. 35 PCS.”

All packages involved in both the original and expanded recall bear the establishment number “Est. 18823” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

All dumplings in both recalls were packed between Oct. 7 and Dec. 8, 2003, and were distributed to grocery stores in California. The products subject to recall have date codes beginning with the letter J, K and L, denoting products produced in October, November and December. For products produced between Oct. 7 and Oct. 31, the date codes are J07 through J31. For products produced between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30, the date codes are K01 through K30 and for products produced between Dec. 1 and Dec. 8, the date codes are L01 through L08.

The Dec. 8 recall was initiated after the company reported to FSIS that it had received consumer complaints. Anyone concerned about an injury from consumption of these products should contact a physician. Today’s action, when combined with the Dec. 8 recall, brings the total amount of implicated product to 90,110 pounds.

Media and consumers with questions about the recall may contact Daniel Yang, company general manager, at 626-913-2728.

Consumers with food safety questions can phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline. The hotline is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
