BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, April 6, 1999 - Vasinee Food Corporation is recalling 100 cartons of 3 Chefs Brand Pickled Lotus Rootlets packed in 24 x 16 oz. glass jar because product may contain undeclared sulfites.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

Product was distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing sulfites was distributed in glass jar that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock can occur in certain sulfite-sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Pickled Lotus Rootlets self revealed that it contained 20.5 milligrams per serving.
