ESTRADA FOODS BURRITOS RECALLED FROM FIVE STATES
WASHINGTON, April 14, 1998--Estrada Foods Inc., a Boulder, Colo., food processing firm, is voluntarily recalling about 9,220 packages of burritos from five states, because the product may cause short-term illness that includes nausea and vomiting.
Subject to recall are all 22.8-oz packages of "Estrada Foods, Inc. Green Chile Burritos," containing 4 burritos (at 5.7 ounces each) distributed last December by "World SHARE," a non-profit organization that distributes food to needy families. "Est. 19273" appears inside the USDA inspection seal on the product label. The product code "029901" appears above the brand name.
World SHARE distributed the burrito 4-packs through its food programs in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
"Because of the potential hazard, we urge consumers to avoid eating the recalled products," said Margaret Glavin, acting administrator of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. "We urge consumers who may have purchased suspect product to return it to the place of purchase," Glavin said.
USDA learned of the problem when investigators discovered that previous production of the product had been epidemiologically linked to outbreaks of vomiting among students in schools in Kansas and Georgia.
Consumers with questions about the recall may phone the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555. The Hotline can be reached from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday.
