Statler Sworn-In As New CPSC Commissioner
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 13) -- Stuart M. Statler was sworn in today as a Commissioner of the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to serve a seven-year term, which expires in late 1986.
The swearing-in ceremony was performed by Esther Peterson, Special Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs, in the Roosevelt Room of the White House with CPSC's other Commissioners in attendance.
Statler joins the Commission after serving since 1973 as Chief Minority Counsel to the U. S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and since 1971 as Counsel to Senator Charles H. Percy (R-Ill.).

He wrote the Interim Report of the National Commission on Product Safety, "Recommending Enactment of a Child Protection Act" (February 1, 1969), and was editor of the National Commission's final report (June 1, 1970).
While working with Senator Percy, Statler also served as Minority Counsel to the Senate Subcommittee on Executive Reorganization from March 1, 1971, to February 1, 1973. From September 1, 1970, to March 1, 1971, he was a Senior Staff Associate on the President's Advisory Council on Executive Organization, and in January, 1971, he was editor of "A New Regulatory Framework -- Report on Selected Independent Regulatory Agencies."
In 1974 and 1975 he also served as Chairman of the Toy Safety Advisory Committee for Giant Food Stores.
A Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of Amherst College in 1965, Statler earned a law degree in 1968 from Harvard University where he was a John Woodruff Simpson Fellow. He was born June 15, 1943 in New York City and recently married Jean Mary Coultas; the couple resides in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
